Wooster cruises in US Senior

Sue Wooster

Australian Sue Wooster has put herself in a promising position as the US Senior Women’s Amateur Championship moves to its match play phase.

Wooster, 55, a member at The National south-east of Melbourne, followed an opening 75 with a second-round 76 today at the Waverley Country Club in Portland, Oregon.

It was good enough to put the reigning Australian Mid-Amateur champion into a share of sixth place after the qualifying phase, with joint medallists local hope Lara Tennant and Canadian Helene Chartrand five shots better at two over.

Wooster, who recently became the first international player to win the Canadian Women’s Senior Championship, was eventually seeded seventh and will face Louisiana’s Julie Harrison in the round of 64 tomorrow.

Impressively, Wooster had 29 pars and a birdie in her stroke rounds, with a couple of double-bogeys the only real blemishes – a fine trend in preparation for the knockout match play.

Harrison was not at her best in an opening 84, but bounced back with a second-round 78 today to finish 11 shots behind Wooster in qualifying.
