10 weeks to #AusOpenGolf: Bob Shearer

There was no bigger name in world golf than Jack Nicklaus, but not even the Golden Bear could stop Bob Shearer at the 1982 Australian Open.

On the Inside The Ropes podcast today, Shearer relived the magical moments of his win in the national championship he’d coveted for years, but thought had slipped through his fingers.

So he wasn’t about to let Nicklaus, who’d become a good mate over the years, steal the show in front of a massive crowd at The Australian Golf Club.

“I was very fortunate. He (Nicklaus) was my boyhood hero and I finished up playing a fair bit with him,” Shearer said.

“I played with him for the first two days that week. He didn’t play well enough to play with me on Saturday, but he got his game around well enough to come with me again on Sunday.”

From sharing ice-creams with Nicklaus in an Ohio gutter to a surprise victory party when he returned to his Melbourne home that night, relive a classic tale from one of Australian golf’s greatest characters as we start the “Road to the Open” 10 weeks out from the 2017 Emirates Australian Open.
